Live and Learn?

Remember the Skill Builder BOM that I've been working on? Well, this BOM is utilizing a quilt as you go method (which is new to me - yay!) and I quilted the January blocks a few days ago.

I got this super pretty spool of variegated purple Aurifil, thinking that the purple would blend with all the different purple fabrics, and complement the aquas nicely.

Well, it did, but I am not a fan of how it looks on the white background. I can't decide if I should live with it, take it out, or re-do these blocks altogether.

What do you think? Maybe part of my problem is that I'm not a big fan of stippling? Don't be fooled by these pictures, it looks even worse in real life...

  1. I love contrasting quilting thread. I'm not a fan of white though. I say leave it like it is...you joined to learn right? If you have learned you don't like it, then don't continue with the rest in like fashion! Life is too short To redo that much quilting, at least that's what I say! I bet you have a laundry list of quilts you'd Like to make (I know I do). I'll pick a few stitches, but not many! I'd rather turn a mistake into a small cat quilt or puppy blanket and donate it to my shelter than to pick stitches...
I think it looks fine. And you're too picky about your quilting quality...it looks great.

  2. I like it as well. I can see how in life it might seem like too much but in picture it came out great. And if the blocks aren't right next to each other then you can do something else for the rest and these will just add character to the quilt.

  3. Thanks guys! I really like the idea of leaving these and doing all the other blocks differently. Thanks for the feedback :-)

  4. Great work, I think you have done a great job. I am still stuck doing the first block because I am having trouble with the quarter inch seam, my machine just doesn't like doing them at all!!

    1. What is going on with your machine? There are a bunch of tutorials out there about finding your quarter. My machine was giving me a hard time at first when I tried using the quarter foot (my fabric was drifting to the left, away from the feed dogs), so I changed to a regular (not quilting) foot, and measured a scant quarter from the center needle position and put a piece of painter's tape on the needle plate as a guide. I hope that helps!

  5. I don't really care for stippling either, but that is likely because I can't do it. I do think your blocks look great and I'm not sure I'd rip out all of that quilting for something that really doesn't look all that bad :)

  6. I too am not a fan of stippling but the pics really don't look bad. Maybe if you keep just those two or three blocks as they are and then switch to white thread for the rest of the quilt you could place those blocks throughout the quilt as "area's of interest". (Oh, and if you don't like the stippling - ditch it - you could do swirls or just lines or something that you like!

  7. I think the thread looks great, but the stippling might not be the best quilting for the white space. I wouldn't take it out though! Just try something different on the next block.

  8. I like the blocks a lot. I agree with others that you can mix it up a little with other blocks.
